Loc Detox + Light Retwist

While I don’t specialize exclusively in loc services, I do offer detox and light maintenance for clients who are looking for a clean reset without heavy product use. This is the method I used for this service.
A lot of people think a “loc detox” is just soaking your hair in something and calling it a day. But a proper detox is about actually removing buildup, residue, and anything sitting inside the locs, not just making it smell clean.
Recently, I had a client who did her own locs and just wanted a clean reset and a light retwist - no heavy products, no buildup, just fresh hair.
Why I Didn’t Use Baking Soda + Apple Cider Vinegar
For this service, I did not use the typical baking soda and apple cider vinegar method.
That method is popular, but it can be:
Harsh on the hair and scalp
Disruptive to the hair’s natural pH balance
Drying, especially for already fragile or mature locs
Instead, I chose professional-grade products from Malibu C — specifically designed to remove buildup without over-stripping the hair.
This approach gives a deeper, more controlled cleanse while keeping the hair in a healthier state.
Step 1: Clarifying the Hair
I started with a clarifying cleanse using Kenra Clarifying Shampoo to break down surface oils and product buildup.
After that, I went in again with Malibu C Un-Do-Goo pH 9 Shampoo to really open things up and deep clean the hair and scalp.
Step 2: Detox Treatment
For the detox, I used Malibu C Head Lab Crystal Gel XL.
I mixed it with warm water and worked it through the locs, making sure to press and squeeze it into the hair so it could fully penetrate. This step is important — just letting it sit on top isn’t enough.
After applying, the client sat under the dryer for about 20 minutes to help the treatment activate.
Then we followed with a warm water soak to help release buildup from inside the locs.
Step 3: Cleanse + Rehydrate
After the detox, I shampooed again with the Un-Do-Goo to remove everything lifted from the hair.
Then I followed with a moisturizing shampoo to bring the hair back to a balanced state so it wouldn’t feel stripped.
At this point, the client’s hair and scalp were completely clean, that true squeaky clean feeling without residue left behind.
Step 4: Light Retwist (No Product)
The client specifically didn’t want gel or wax, so I respected that.
I did a light retwist using only As I Am Rosemary Water. This gives a more natural finish — softer hold, but no buildup.
She sat under the dryer for about 30 minutes to set the retwist.
Step 5: Finishing Touch
After drying, I lightly sprayed the ends with the rosemary water and Mizani 25 Miracle Milk to keep the hair hydrated and refreshed.
Final Thoughts
This type of service is perfect if you:
Feel like your locs are heavy or coated
Use a lot of products and need a reset
Want a clean scalp without buildup
Prefer a natural, lightweight retwist instead of a stiff hold
It’s not about making the hair look perfect, it’s about getting it actually clean and healthy from the inside out.
